Fairytale Sunday

Okay, not really a fairytale, but as close as I'll get to one...

Reader Maki asked:
How long have you and your boyfriend been together? How did you meet?

I met the cop way before he was a cop, when I was a youngin' in highschool (still in braces, no less). He played guitar in the church band, and we were introduced by a mutual friend. Well, the cop was dating someone at the time, this really snooty Bible beater who I would have liked to actually beat the crap out of with a Bible (like the huge, leather-bound, family heirloom kind), but I didn't because I was a good Christian, and she was so cynically nice to everyone all the time, that there was no way you could strangle her without some public backlash.

Well, me and the cop befriended each other. We hung out with a larger group of friends together after church - his current girlfriend never wanted to stick around with us - and we became pretty good friends. He eventually confided in me that his relationship was not all that good, and he really just felt he was in it because it was "safe" etc. etc. I gave him advice, and I told him to work it out with her - it was obvious there must be something if they stuck together so long. But I still remember all the talking he did about the things she did, and how he wasn't happy. And one night he called, and I just said "You know what... dump her." The following summer, we started dating (surprise), but since I was still in the immature, use-em-and-lose-em stage, I guess we got uncomfortably close and I broke up with him at the end of the summer. We stayed distant friends for years, going long spans without ever talking to each other.

We both went on with our lives - he started college, I finished highschool. I was in a pretty serious relationship, and we hadn't talked for a very long time. But one night, I had this random dream about him. In this dream, something bad had happened, he came to my house and came running into my arms sobbing his eyes out. *shrug* I have no idea why I had that dream. But the next morning, it had bothered me so badly that I sent him an email to see how he was doing. And one email turned into two and so on. He told me how he was in a relationship with someone, and I told him about mine. We realized that I was going to be going to the same college he was attending. He told me how he was struggling in school. We promised to stay in touch.

In the middle of the night one night, he called me and asked me to meet him in our old church parking lot. He was absolutely broken. He had been in a huge fight with his girlfriend, and didn't know what to do or who to talk to. For whatever reason, he felt the need to call me. At this time, my boyfriend and I had been together almost a year and a half, but we were having serious problems. The cop and I became closer and leaned on each other during our relationship problems. We started carpooling to classes every now and then to save gas since we lived down the street from each other, and we gave each other advice on working out our relationship problems.

The end of my relationship with my ex was when the cop called in tears after having another fight with his girlfriend. I told my ex that I was going to see the cop and talk to him, and my ex didn't want me to because he said he needed me NOW (even though we were just at church group and he didn't actually need me for anything). A nasty fight ensued that showed me exactly how little I was respected as a person, much less loved as a girlfriend. I told him then that was the absolute end of our relationship.

The cop supported me. He was there for me. I had lost a whole slice of my life, including a lot of friends who I thought would still be there, but weren't. The cop introduced me to new friends who loved me for me and not for who I dated. The cop ended his relationship with his girlfriend when he got tired of picking her up when she was drunk. On October 12, 2003, the cop confessed that he loved me and gave me the best kiss of my life on the back porch of his friend's house during a party. I still remember what I was wearing even! I knew right then how much I loved him, and I have loved him ever since.

We were best friends then, and we still are.
I can't wait to celebrate five years next month!

Note to Self: To the cop - love you, sunshine!
