Material Girl

Note: Before I move on to the post, I want to point out that I have done some editing on my Blog Roll. People have been moved around and some new sites have been added. Again, if you have been hanging around here, make sure you drop me a comment if you're not on my blogroll yet.

It's that time of year guys - the time of year where you empty your already slim wallet to shell out some cash on something that smells good, tastes good, or shines - the day that determines where you sleep the next few weeks -

Valentine's Day.
So ladies, let's remember that money is tight in these economic times, and your sweetheart may not be able to afford flowers or a shiny bauble. And guys, remember that, ultimately, it's the thought that counts. But just because you feel it's a stupid consumer holiday, that doesn't mean you can skip it...

I can't stand women who are obsessed with things, as if they matter so much more than the feeling behind the giving. I can't get over the amount of women who asked me the carat weight of the diamond in my engagement ring after the cop proposed.

I don't know and I DON'T CARE.

I don't plan to sell it anytime soon, so I'm not really worried about knowing. Plus, like what? After he proposed I was supposed to say "Yes, honey, I'll marry you! By the way, how big is this bling, and how much did you pay for it?"

What I do know about it is that I didn't have to hold my fiancee's hand and pick it out for myself - he did it all on his own - and that made it more special to me. I also know that he makes diddly-squat for money as a cop, and he really had to make some lifestyle sacrifices to afford it. I also know that he loves me very much and put a lot of thought into picking it out, since he knew it was something I would have to wear forever (because that's how long we plan to stay together).

So ladies, before you get bummed out that your boy-toy made you a cd of tunes that remind him of you instead of showering you with teddy bears, flowers, and candy, take some time to think about how much thought he had to put into his gift. And how you will feel about that cd in the future as opposed to the obnoxious stuffed animals, dead flowers, and eaten candy.

Personally, all that candy just makes me feel the need to hit the gym more. Ugh.

Note to Self: And as I sit here writing this, I'm interrupted by the florist with an early V-Day delivery of tulips from the policeman himself. Thanks, babe, you're the best!

MJ, thank you for writing this! Hubby and I don't do V-day at all. It's too much of a Hallmark holiday and we refuse to buy into it. I'm sure some think I say that as a mental defense mechanism to avoid disappointment on the red holiday...promise you won't tell anyone?! LOL!

Oh Tulips how sweet! Frankly my husband isn't big into Valentines Day he doesn't believe that because it's a day that your supposed to show your loved one how much you care because of Hallmark rather women and men should do this year round...so we do and we are cooking dinner at home...no gifts...cards most likely and I did place an ad in the paper for him because that is what he did for me 10 years ago.

Hi MJ,

I bet you didn't even try and scratch glass with it. What a good person you are.

My thoughts are more along the lines of "please...no teddy bears...no more "stuff!" I'd much rather just have dinner and time :)

Hey MJ,
The LT and I don't do Valentine's either. We don't see what's romantic about a holiday that FORCES you to be romantic.
We were broke college kids when we got engaged. My diamond ring came from his mother's jewelry box, and originally was his paternal grandmother's from her first husband, who died in the Korean War. So even though the ring is tiny, there is NO WAY to attach value to it.

I am making Dh's fave dinner of tri-tip and he got me some gorgeous yellow roses. He has never been a big flower giver, but this year he remembered, and got me my faves. Its not so much the holiday to me, as the fact that he actually remembers what my favorite is! He was so cute when I got home, waiting for me to notice them!

I think you hit the nail on the head....
For V-day my husband put alot of thought into it. He had the kids make me a bag with their handprints on it - to store my afghan I am crocheting. He also got me a henna tattoo book....something we can do together....I thought it was different, but he then pointed to one and said he wanted to paint that one on my shoulder...so he had a lot of thought into it....

I happen to fall upon your blog - the title of your blog caught my eye. I love the way you think! I couldn't have said it any better about Vday! Your thoughts on the "ring" is what I have always said.
