I have to say that Batman has always been my favorite superhero movie series.
They always have the hunks playing Batman and generally good actors playing the villains (ignoring the entire Batman and Robin movie, whose only saving grace was that Chris O'Donnell is a complete freakin' hottie, although not a good Robin character).
But I went and saw The Dark Knight last night, and it totally blew me away. I didn't expect such an awesome movie. Heath Ledger portrayed the Joker amazingly. I could see how in real life he could be disturbed by this role. It wasn't bold music and flashing scene, jump out of your seat scary. It was get under your skin and mess with your brain scary. I have to say, I cringed throughout the movie, and I thought many times - this is the thing nightmares are made of.
Just compare Jack Nicholson's character from the first Batman to this updated version (click for larger picture):
Jack was scary in a clean, off-beat sort of way. Heath's character is just plain insane, evil, and frightening.
To keep this short and sweet, it was the best movie I've seen so far this year. So if you've been hesitant to see it, don't be.
Note to Self: If anyone is up for it, I don't mind seeing it again!

I have to watch Batman Begins first-- I've never seen it! I recorded it on the Tivo, though...

Batman (and Wolverine) have long been my favorites in the Superhero arena. In a display of great geekness, I'll demonstrate this by mentioning that I own a copy of the comic book that introduced Wolverine, Incredible Hulk #181 (1974), and I have two sets of The Dark Knight Returns series by Frank Miller (1986) on which the latest Batman movie is based. Ahead of my time, as usual :)
